In Good Hands

Domaine des Lambrays

(Morey-Saint-Denis)

On our last visit one year ago the estate was still being built up, the gardeners setting out the surrounding gardens, the bricklayers improving the old estate buildings. This year the work was completed; the domain has been reconstructed in period style, the gardens full of cosy hidden spots for the summer days.

Clos des Lambrays - Garden

Together with the good-humoured Thierry Brouin we sampled the 1999 vintage from the barrel. The cellar rooms are vast, and they have to be to house the 150 barrels of Clos des Lambrays and the other wines of the estate.

Barrel samples:

Morey-St.-Denis 1999
Morello red. Cranberry aroma. Good sweetness in the mouth, cranberries and finely structured tannin. A very full-bodied Morey Village.

Morey-St.-Denis 1er Cru 1999
Brilliant cherry red. Red apple skin fragrance. Very fine tannin. Blackcurrants. Sweetness and some vanilla.

Clos des Lambrays 1999
Ruby red. Venison, leather and fur notes. Still closed. Full and long. Cranberry, touches of cinnamon and dark cherry in the finish. 50% new wood.

Puligny Clos du Cailleret 1999
Light yellow. Classic. Lemons and orange skin. Fat, full, and very good in the mouth.

We also sampled the Clos des Lambrays and the two Puligny wines of the 2000 vintage and were able to arrive at a first impression. The Clos des Lambrays is juicy and has intense fruit. The two Puligny-Montrachet 1er Crus Les Folatières and Clos du Cailleret still have a lot of carbon dioxide, rich in lemon fruit, mineral and good acidity. Brouin is very content with the vintage.

Bottle samples:

Morey-St.-Denis 1998
Light cherry red. Plums, Terroir touches. Cherry and still some green tones. Full-bodied.

Morey-St.-Denis 1er Cru 1998
Cherry red. Plum, Cassis. Good tannin, good sweetness.

Clos des Lambrays 1998
Brilliant ruby red. Dark fruit. Still rather closed. In the mouth dark fruit, plum, keen on the tongue, fine tannin, blackberry and some boiled fruit, red apple and still fresh touches, wood. Long and intensive. A very good Clos des Lambrays.

Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1998
Light golden. Tropical fruit, passion fruit, lemon. Mineral. Fine acridity. Flint, butter. Very intensive and long, very fine. This wine is great fun already.
