Off the Road

Yves Bazin

(Villars-Fontaine - Hautes Côtes de Nuits)

Yves Bazin

A short trip to the Hautes-Côtes into the hills which are situated above the Côte d'Or is definitely worthwhile. One findes good Burgundy at reasonable prices. Though they can't compete with some sensations from the Côte, they are, if they are good, typical wines and storable and have a refine taste. This year we visited Yves Bazin in Villars-Fontaine above Nuits-St.-Georges.

whites:

Aligote 2000
Bright yellow. In the fragrance lemon and honey. In the mouth good acidity and good fruit. Pleasant fine Aligote.

Hautes Côtes de Nuits 1998 blanc
Darker yellow. In the fragrance flowers and wood tones. In the mouth good acidity and acacia. Good wine.

reds:

Hautes Côtes de Nuits 1998
Cherry red. Aromas of cranberries and blueberry. Plenty of tannin, good acidity. In the finish morellos. Still more or less closed.

Hautes Côtes de Nuits 1997
Two vintages in new wood:
Blackberry red. In the fragrance dark fruit. In the mouth blackberry, vanilla and wood. Strong tannins. Still closed.

We also drank a 1986 Hautes Côtes de Nuits which we bought at Bazin's. The wine showed similar characteristics as discribed above. Amazingly it made the impression to be still young, but seemed not raly to have improved from the storing. The wine seems to be quite storable without developing much.
